Statute of Limitations

A statute of limitations is a deadline for filing a lawsuit.

Most states have statutes of limitations of 4 to 6 years. Keep in mind, this the the time period in which the creditor must file a lawsuit. The time period for collecting a judgment from the debtor in most states can be 10 years. This time period can also be extended in court.
